At GFO Stone, workplace safety and employee health remain a top priority. This guidance is intended for fabrication workers, installers, and contractors involved in cutting, grinding, polishing, and fabricating stone materials. It provides important information regarding respirable crystalline silica hazards, OSHA compliance standards, exposure prevention measures, and recommended workplace safety practices.

OSHA Compliance Statement GFO Stone is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and supporting compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations concerning respirable crystalline silica exposure.

In accordance with OSHA’s Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard (29 CFR 1926.1153 and 29 CFR 1910.1053), GFO Stone promotes workplace practices designed to reduce employee exposure to airborne silica dust generated during stone fabrication, cutting, grinding, polishing, and installation activities.

What is Respirable Crystalline Silica? Respirable crystalline silica is a very small airborne particle created during cutting, grinding, drilling, polishing, crushing, or fabricating natural stone, quartz, engineered stone, and similar materials.

Materials that may contain crystalline silica include granite, quartz, quartzite, sandstone, engineered stone surfaces, and concrete and masonry products commonly used in fabrication and installation work.

Health Hazards Associated with Silica Exposure Exposure to respirable crystalline silica may result in serious occupational health hazards, including silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), kidney disease, and long-term respiratory system damage.

Workers involved in fabrication and installation activities must avoid inhalation of airborne silica dust and follow all required safety procedures and protective measures.

Exposure Control Measures GFO Stone supports the implementation of engineering controls, safe work practices, and respiratory protection programs intended to minimize silica dust exposure during fabrication and cutting operations.

Dry cutting or dry grinding of stone materials without proper dust control measures is strongly discouraged in fabrication and contractor work environments.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Fabrication workers and contractors should use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including NIOSH-approved respirators, safety glasses or face shields, hearing protection, protective gloves, and protective clothing when required.

Respiratory protection programs should comply with OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.134.
